LEARNING TO SOAR

by Lenore Moss

STREET WITNESSING
"But you will receive power when the holy Spirit comes on you;
and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in Judea
and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."  Acts 1:8

      While Peter and David delivered the Braille Bibles to the orphanage, I spent considerable time interceding in prayer.  Since we still had most of the afternoon free, I said to Dianne, my partner, "Let's take some tracts and New Testament we were given and go out and do some street witnessing."

      "That's a good idea."  Dianne replied.  We prayed and then went out to see what would happen.  I was astonished at the crowd of people who gathered around us to accept a tract and listen to us tell about Jesus.  One older man said, "Oh, the Bible is just a nice western story."

      I bristled at his remark and said, "Wait just a minute, Mister.  The Bible is the inspired word of God!" I became very excited and started talking faster.  Dianne said, "Calm down, Lenore.  You need to speak slowly because they don't know English very well."

      Just then a kind gentleman introduced himself to us and said, "I teach at the university.  I am very interested in learning about your God.  I've heard stories about Him."

      I took my Chinese New Testament out of my purse and said, "Here, I'll give you this Bible and you can read about God and His Son Jesus."  With trembling hands, he took the Bible and caressed it gently then clasped it to his chest saying, "Thank you, thank you.  I shall cherish it always.  You are so kind."

      I just about cried then and said, "When you read the Bible it will change your life."  By now a group of about twenty men and women were crowding around us, listening raptly to our talk about Jesus, smiling at us.

      Suddenly I heard someone yelling at me from the top of an outside escalator at the hotel.  It was a young man who had been in the crowd listening to us.  He yelled at me, saying. "Lady, do you think your God can help me?"  Smiling back at him, I yelled, "Yes! Oh yes, He can!   Call out to Jesus and see what He will do for you!  Try Him!"  Then he turned and disappeared into the hotel.

      When we returned to our room I prayed for all the people we had talked to, especially the young man on the escalator.  I can still see him smiling, his voice filled with eager anticipation, that, just maybe, there is hope.

      I thank God for the opportunity to bring encouragement to people in a foreign land who are hungering for the words of hope in their bleak existence in a Godless country.

      I prayed, "Oh Jesus, may the seeds we planted in Your name today take root in their hearts and may they hunger and thirst to know You."

      The Bible says that nothing is impossible with God!
