LEARNING TO SOAR

RAINBOWS
"I have set my bow in the cloud..."Genesis 9:13

I was having an exciting time writing poems and sharing them with friends.  I didn't have so much time to think about Audrey and how much I missed her.

Then one day my friend, Adabelle, said, "Lenore, you should read the Bible so you will know what God is saying to us. But start with the New Testament because the Old Testament is hard to understand."

I read through the New Testament and found it relevant to my life, even though, at times, I did ponder over some Scriptures.  Then I began reading the Old Testament, but hadn't read very far in the book of Genesis.

One afternoon, upon opening the sliding back door after returning from the market, a poem about the rainbow popped into my mind.  I hurried into the house to write it down before I would forget.  I titled the poem Rainbows.

The rain came in answer to a thirsty earth
Spilling o're the mountains; soon the brook would burst
Across the plains and valleys, rushing to the sea
Don't you sometimes wonder: what does this all mean?

Soon the sun comes peeking around the clouds of grey
Back again to bring warmth and brighten up your day!
I saw the pretty rainbow and traced the perfect arch
Up across the hillside and down into the marsh.

Now, you can smile at rainbows or just sit and frown.
Laugh at your troubles--don't let them get you down
            God is there to help you turn your life around;
Just rely on Jesus and know His word is sound.

So watch for pretty rainbows in the cloudy sky
And know that better days are coming bye and bye.

You can imagine my astonishment when, the very next day, while reading Genesis, I came to chapter 9, verse 13 and 14 where God tells Noah, "I set My bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth. Ant it shall come about, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud."

God made a covenant with Noah never to destroy all life on earth again by flood.  I had no idea the rainbow had  any significance.  I thought it was a beautiful phenomenon of nature.

Though many years have passed and I've been through numerous trials, the sight of a rainbow still makes me smile as I recall that memorable day.  I will always believe God was making a covenant with me:  If I will rely on Jesus to lead me, He will see me through any strom clouds looming on the horizon.
