LEARNING TO SOAR

PASTOR LAMB
"They will tell of the power of Your awesome works, and I will
proclaim Your great deeds."  Psalm 145:6

Arriving at Canton, we were confronted with 100 degree heat, quite a sudden change from the cool mountains of Kunming.  At the airport we were met by a precious girl who escorted us to our hotel.  She said she had arranged for us to visit a house church.  I was glad because it had been my heart's desire.

On a certain day this precious girl took us to visit Samuel Lamb, pastor of a Chinese house church.  What a blessing we received!  After climbing up several flights of stairs we arrived at a small room lined with wooden benches where Pastor Lamb preached every week to a crowd of people hungry for the Word of God.

We gathered around Pastor Lamb, listening attentively as he told us of his painful years in prison for preaching the Gospel.  I was amazed to see this man smiling after so many harsh years of confinement in forced labor camps.  His latter years were spent in a coal mine.  Though he had no Bible, the Scriptures were hidden in his heart and he preached to the other prisoners.

It was heart-wrenching to hear Samuel tell how his wife had died just months before he was released from a twenty year prison term.  He spoke of the terrible shock of finally returning home only to find that his wife was not there to greet him.

Sitting in the bleak surroundings sipping the chilled juice we had been graciously served, my eyes drank in the sparse furnishings of this underground church where thousands of people had come to this very room to hear Pastor Lamb preach the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Tears filled my eyes as I humbly observed this gentle, patient man of God.  I was keenly aware of my flawed view of what it means to be a dedicated Christian.  I left there praying for God to help me become as dedicated as Pastor Lamb.  I thanked God for letting me meet him.

The next day we went by train back to Hong Kong with our guide.   Though we were nearing the end of our trip we spent another day enjoying each other's company.  I was longing to return home by this time.  It had been over two weeks since I arrived at the training ranch near Lancaster, CA.

On Sunday afternoon of our last day in Hong Kong, we went by bus to Camp Hang Fook to attend church service.  Jackie Pullinger was not there, having gone to England to conduct a seminar.  We were blessed and refreshed and ready to embark on our flight headed for San Francisco later that evening.

Our rewarding journey would soon be an unforgettable memory.  I thank God for letting me be a small part of His Kingdom work.

I pray,  "Oh Lord, may these wonderful adventures in China that You allowed me to experience be a blessing to whoever reads them, and may these stories touch their hearts and draw them closer to You!
