LEARNING TO SOAR

BRAILLE BIBLES
"How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter
than honey to my mouth."  Psalm 119:103

After our mission was completed, our team did some sightseeing, including a tour of the Great Wall.  We visited Tiananmen Square, which was impressive with the huge picture of Mao overlooking the entire Square and connecting busy street.

Another interesting  visit was to a TSPM (government) church which was packed.  However, very few people had Bibles, I noted.  We learned later that the sermon was a good salvation message taken right from the Gospel of Matthew 16 and from John 12.  Since I could not understand what was being said, I prayed for the people, asking God to move mightily in their midst.  I felt a peace as God assured that 'His word will not return void.'  The next day we flew on to Shanghai.

In my suitcase I carried some Braille Bibles all the way from Lancaster, California to Shanghai.  Our mission in Shanghai was to deliver Braille Bibles to an orphanage for blind children.  We could not all go to the orphanage so Peter and David were selected to carry out the delivery.

After praying over the young men, we sent them out.  It was a long walk out to the orphanage carrying their precious cargo so we didn't expect them to return until late afternoon.  I spent considerable time praying for them and thinking about the orphans.  I wondered how they would react when they received the Braille Bibles, which were the size of large, thick notebooks.

My heart went out to those dear children who were not only orphaned, but also blind.  Because I had been raised in an orphanage my self, I felt kindred in spirit with them and asked God to watch over them.

How delighted I was when Peter and David returned and told us of the excitement at the orphanage when the children discovered what the young men had brought them.

Peter said, "I watched a sixteen-year-old run his fingers across the pages and exclaim, "The Psalms!"  You should have seen the smile that spread across his face."

Listening to the account of their reception by the orphans over the wonderful gift of God's word brought tears to my eyes and my heart did a flip-flop!  I thanked God for allowing me to be a part of spreading so much joy.

Yes! God's word truly is sweeter than honey!
